Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities should take seriously the aspirations of Kinmen residents and stop political maneuvering over a proposed bridge linking Kinmen Island with the mainland city of Xiamen, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a regular press conference, Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said the construction of the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge reflects the common aspiration and pressing wish of residents on both sides.

Once fully operational, the bridge will make travel between Xiamen and Kinmen more convenient and provide fresh impetus for Kinmen's economic development and improvements in people's livelihoods, Zhang said.

She urged the DPP authorities to address the interests and concerns of Kinmen residents, stop political maneuvering and genuinely work for their benefit by supporting the bridge's early completion and opening to traffic.
