Health without borders: A Chinese digital rehab therapist's journey to Kyrgyzstan

On August 22, an unusual "rehabilitation therapist" arrived at the Clinical Emergency Hospital in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan. Combining 3D vision and AI-powered motion recognition, the Digital Rehabilitation Therapist (DRT) can detect subtle movements deviations from leg raises to knee bends. 

It draws on a database of more than 100,000 rehabilitation cases from Peking University Third Hospital, bringing movement assessment, rehabilitation prescriptions and training guidance into a single digital system. It was donated by China to Kyrgyzstan.

Santa Beknazarova, head of the Department of Medical Rehabilitation of the Clinical Emergency Hospital, stood beside her new digital "colleague" and demonstrated how it works.

"When a movement is not performed correctly, the device shows a red or yellow light. When it is done correctly, the light turns green," she said.

She hopes the system will help doctors develop more precise exercise plans for patients and allow more people to access them on their phones.

Trauma care and post-injury rehabilitation remain major challenges in Kyrgyzstan. A new National Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics is under construction in Bishkek, an initiative promoted by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, and is set to open by year's end. The DRT will also be relocated there.

More than a decade of medical cooperation

Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and one of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner countries. Medical cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan goes back more than a decade.

"We have maintained close cooperation with our Chinese colleagues since 2013," Dzhumabekov recalled.

That year, the two sides signed a cooperation agreement on traumatology and orthopedics, followed by specialist exchanges, joint operations, research and academic conferences. In 2023, a new memorandum of understanding expanded cooperation to more institutions and universities.

"China has more than 250,000 orthopedic and trauma doctors. Every year, we take part in academic conferences, where we present our work and share experience," he said.

Over the years, those exchanges have moved beyond conference rooms and into patient care.

In 2023, a Chinese program offering free cataract surgery launched in Bishkek, with plans to restore sight for 600 patients. It later expanded to Osh. By May 2026, more than 1,500 Kyrgyz patients had received free surgery.

In October 2024, Chinese thoracic surgeons traveled to Bishkek for exchanges and training in minimally invasive surgery. Local doctors said the expertise shared could strengthen clinical capacity and improve patient care.

Joint operations, free medical services, professional training, equipment support and research collaboration have built a growing network of medical cooperation between the two countries. That cooperation has continued to expand under the BRI and SCO frameworks.

"The two governments and heads of state are making great efforts to promote friendship, cooperation and common development in traumatology and orthopedics," Dzhumabekov said.

Taking medical innovation across borders

"In many countries, there is no shortage of doctors. What is truly scarce are experienced rehabilitation professionals," said Wu Yan, a representative of the DRT development team.

She believes smart rehabilitation technology, used alongside trained professionals, can help areas with limited specialist resources provide more standardized care.

She recalls a Kyrgyz medical delegation visiting China and seeing the DRT in use firsthand.

"They hoped to bring this system, which combines China's experience in sports medicine and rehabilitation with artificial intelligence, to Kyrgyzstan so it could benefit local people," Wu said.

That interest turned a technical visit into an everyday helathcare practice.

"Delivering the device is not the end of our cooperation. It is really the beginning," Wu said.

Training and remote technical support will continue, the development team said, while feedback from Kyrgyz clinicians will help the team refine the product. Knowledge and needs will flow in both directions, turning technology sharing into a journey of mutual learning and growth.

For Wu, the cooperation signals a shift in China's sports medicine and rehabilitation expertise, from academic discussion toward practical clinical application.

After more than a decade of China-Kyrgyzstan medical cooperation, the DRT's arrival is a concrete example of healthcare cooperation under the BRI and SCO platforms.

What has traveled across the border is not merely a piece of equipment, but years of accumulated clinical experience, digital technology and continued technical support.

The development team hopes the project will serve as a starting point for the DRT's use in more countries and regions, allowing medical advances to reach more people in need.

When technologies like the DRT can cross borders and continue helping patients far from where they were developed, the idea of "health without borders" becomes something tangible.
