The barrier lake above mudslide-hit Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region has basically drained, forming a flowing state of the river channel, China's Ministry of Water Resources said Sunday, citing drone footage and panoramic images captured in the morning and reports from emergency response teams.

The barrier lake was formed by a fast-moving chain mudslide that struck Gyirong Port on the China-Nepal border. The mudslide, triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse on the Nepali side, has caused heavy casualties and left many missing.

The ministry said an impact crater upstream of the barrier lake still warrants attention. Located about 5.6 kilometers upstream at an altitude of around 3,700 meters, the crater is roughly 800 meters higher than the barrier lake.

At 11:23 a.m. Sunday, the crater had a water surface area of about 108,000 square meters, down 19,000 square meters from 7 a.m., with a storage volume of about 1.4 million cubic meters.

Water was flowing out continuously about 180 meters downstream of the crater's dam, and three water accumulation areas within 2.5 kilometers downstream had a combined surface area of less than 70,000 square meters.

The crater and the three downstream water accumulation areas still pose risk hazards and require continued monitoring, the ministry said.

A new barrier lake formed on Saturday about 2.8 kilometers downstream of the previous one after a landslide on the Nepali side. The barrier dam has been breached by upstream water flow, forming a flowing state of the river channel, according to drone footage and panoramic images.
