Rescuers in Nepal and China on Sunday raced to find thousands of people missing after a glacier collapse unleashed a catastrophic mudslide across the Himalayas.

Over 780 people have been killed in Nepal, with more than 2,700 people still unaccounted for, according to local police. Sixteen people have been confirmed dead and 546 others remain missing as of 6 p.m. Saturday after the mudslide struck Gyirong Port along the China-Nepal border in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region on August 26, according to the regional government.

Communication signals have reached the core rescue site at the mudslide-hit Gyirong Port, local officials confirmed on Sunday.

Apart from rescue and relief operations on its own side, China actively implemented a package of assistance to Nepal, including emergency cash aid and humanitarian assistance.
