Like in China: Shared flavors and everyday life between China and Guatemala

Global Stringer

China has an old saying: "Food is the people's heaven." And thousands of miles away in Guatemala, food is equally a bond that connects families, markets and the soul of the city. In this episode, host Pablo Coppari and Guatemalan journalist Alejandro visit Guatemala city's historic Central Market. Strolling through stalls brimming with vegetables, spices and vibrant colors, they talk about the familiar element of bargaining found in markets on both sides of the world, as well as the habit Alejandro picked up in China and still keeps to this day – drinking something hot before and after meals. Alejandro says that when he first arrived in Beijing, he felt like he had "stepped into the future." But what surprised him most was finding something familiar in those unfamiliar streets – a respect for culture, a commitment to tradition and a shared pursuit of a better life.
