China's Wu Yibing, Wang Xinyu advance to second round at US Open

China's Wu Yibing and Wang Xinyu both claimed straight-sets victories to start their campaigns at the US Open on Sunday.

Wu, 26, defeated Australia's Adam Walton 7-6(2), 6-2, 7-5 to reach the men's singles second round at Flushing Meadows.

"I didn't play well at the beginning. I was hesitant to go for my shots from the baseline," Wu reflected. "Winning some key points in the tiebreaker was very decisive. I still need to be more relaxed."

Wu will face either Italy's Matteo Arnaldi or Australia's James Duckworth next.

In the women's singles first round, the 24-year-old Wang enjoyed a smooth start, en route to seeing off Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-2 in 78 minutes, while Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai, 37, lost to 31st-seeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-2.

"I will strive to play my own game. No matter who is on the other side of the court, I will try to be as aggressive as possible," noted Wang, who will meet the winner of an all-Russian clash between Anna Kalinskaya and Anna Blinkova.

China's Zheng Qinwen and Wang Xiyu are scheduled to take to the court in the women's singles first round later on Monday, with Shang Juncheng slated to compete on the men's side.
