Unlocking the Wisdom of Cairo's Celebrated Nilometer

01:42

Rhoda Island in Cairo is the location of Egypt's most famous Nilometer. Built in 861 AD, this wonder of hydrological monitoring consists of a marble column and a well, inside which a flight of 45 stone steps served as precise markings, recording every "breath" and "pulse" of the Nile and making it possible to measure the river's level in real time.
