Violence broke out in Madrid after largely peaceful protests over Ceuta and the government's handling of the migrant crisis turned ugly.

Neo-Nazi group Nucleo Nacional faced off with police, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Thousands had taken to the streets across Spain in "a show of solidarity with Ceuta and a reaffirmation of Spanish sovereignty," the center-right People's Party (PP) said.

The far-right Vox party called the day of action "a protest against a government of traitors," while left-wing Podemos held a smaller anti-racism rally nearby.
