From California's empty swimming pools to city streets around the world, skateboarding's evolution comes to life through the lens at a new exhibition at Fotografiska Shanghai. Featuring more than 180 photographs by over 20 artists, the exhibition traces five decades of skate culture and the images that helped transform it from a local pastime into a global movement, including a landmark jump over the Great Wall.

Long before skateboarding became a competitive sport, California surfers turned to boards to keep moving when the waves were flat. As softer polyurethane wheels emerged in the 1970s, skateboards became more maneuverable, opening up streets, slopes and empty swimming pools as new terrain – and giving rise to a culture that photography would capture and carry around the world.
