The 31-year-old Kazakh, visibly frustrated with her performance, took out her anger on her racquet.

Zheng has endured a tumultuous journey, undergoing an elbow operation last July that sidelined her until February. Following a brief return to the WTA Tour, the Chinese star found herself struggling for form, leading to a drop outside the Top 100. Her less-than-optimal fitness level was noticeable as she dropped the second set, with Putintseva capitalizing on the 23-year-old's inconsistency.

But in a thrilling display of resilience, Zheng rallied in the deciding set, showcasing multiple flashes of her best tennis.
