Support for trade retaliation against the United States has surged to a record high in Canada, with roughly 80% of Canadians backing dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs amid an escalating tariff standoff between the two neighbors, according to a new poll.

The robust public sentiment follows a collapse of Canada-US trade talks in late August, after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on hundreds of Canadian commodities, prompting Ottawa to pledge dollar-for-dollar tariffs on a wide range of US goods, scheduled to take effect on Tuesday.

According to a Nanos Research survey conducted for The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper, published on Saturday, an overwhelming 85% of Canadian respondents support their government's refusal to accept Washington's proposed terms. Meanwhile, 74% say they no longer view the US as a trustworthy ally.
