US doctor George Hatem was the first foreigner to gain both membership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chinese citizenship. He offered medical services to frontline CPC forces and witnessed convergence of the Red Army during the Long March.

Speaking on how the Long March spirit now impacts younger generations, Ma Lan, granddaughter of George Hatem, said everyone needs endurance today.
