Foreign journalists shared their first impressions after visiting the core disaster area of Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, where a massive mudslide triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse in Nepal swept through the area on August 26.

The journalists, from countries and regions including Brazil, India and the United States, visited the devastated port over the weekend to witness rescue and recovery efforts firsthand and assess the devastating impact of the massive mudslide.

Simone McCarthy, a senior China reporter for CNN International, described the scene in her report: "Entering the disaster area, heavy dust and fog filled the air. Numerous rescue vehicles were at the site and officials everywhere directed traffic. The road, completely destroyed, has been covered in gravel to make it passable."

Citing Chinese rescuers, McCarthy's report highlighted the challenging conditions facing rescue teams. "First, there's a lot of mud and silt. There are also a lot of boulders, and we're facing some secondary hazards as well. The geology here is not particularly stable," Yang Qiqiao, a Chinese rescuer, told McCarthy.

After spending nearly 14 hours traveling from Lhasa to Gyirong Port, McCarthy noted that the journey underscored how remote the region is and how difficult it had been for rescue workers to reach the disaster zone.

For the foreign journalists on the ground, the speed and scale of China’s response were particularly striking. "It's really impressive how fast China acts," said Bruno Falci, a Brazilian journalist with Latin American television channel teleSUR, in an interview with CGTN.

Pointing to the large number of rescue workers and heavy machinery at the site, Falci said teams had been working there for 11 days.

"It's a very difficult place to bring support materials, assistance, everything that people need, and rescue teams and specialists," he said. "So it's really impressive how fast China acts and how quickly the state came to rescue its people and provide support."

Muhammad Asghar of the Associated Press of Pakistan also highlighted the remoteness of the disaster zone. It took the group of foreign journalists about a day and a half to reach Gyirong Port, he told the Global Times.

"This is a remote area and very difficult to reach," Asghar said, adding that he was impressed by the efforts of Chinese rescue teams.

"They are working round the clock for rescue and relief efforts," he said.

KJM Varma Mokanda, China correspondent for the Press Trust of India, also praised China's capacity to respond to major emergencies.

"China has this particular capacity to address this kind of crisis," Mokanda was quoted as saying by Bastille Post.

He noted that China has a large pool of specially trained personnel, as well as machinery designed for this type of rescue operation.

Mokanda also expressed his appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the Chinese rescue workers.

While highlighting the challenges facing rescue teams, the journalists also stressed that the disaster should serve as a reminder of the need for stronger international cooperation to address climate-related risks.

McCarthy wrote that the disaster could serve as a catalyst for more intensive monitoring, data sharing and the development of early-warning systems between China and Nepal, particularly as climate change is making natural disasters more frequent and unpredictable.

Falci described the mudslide in Nepal as a warning to people around the world and called for action to curb global warming.

"We need to take action to curb global warming, because this is a major warning, a warning to everyone around the world," he said.

Asghar likewise emphasized that climate change is a global challenge that cannot be addressed by any single country.

"I believe climate change is not a problem for any single country, but a challenge facing the entire world," he said, noting that all countries must pool their wisdom and work together to address it.
