Expert: Glaciers increasingly unstable due to global warming

Following the deadly mudslide that hit Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, Chinese expert Yao Tandong, who led the country's second Qinghai-Xizang Plateau scientific expedition, warns that rapid warming is making high-altitude glaciers increasingly unstable – and more likely to collapse. He calls for urgent action: regional risk surveys, closer monitoring of high-risk glaciers and glacial lakes, better modeling of the ice-water-atmosphere interplay, and stronger early-warning and international cooperation.
