China's Zheng Qinwen staged another remarkable comeback at the US Open on Monday, recovering from 5-0 down in the opening set to beat eighth seed Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3 and advance to the women's singles quarterfinals.

Swiatek, the 2022 US Open champion, dominated the early exchanges at Arthur Ashe Stadium and raced into a 5-0 lead in just 23 minutes.

Zheng then turned the match around, saving three set points and winning seven consecutive games to take the opener 7-5. The Chinese qualifier maintained her momentum in the second set and broke Swiatek for a 4-3 advantage before closing out the match in one hour and 56 minutes.

It marked the second straight match in which Zheng had recovered from a 5-0 deficit to win a set. In the third round, the 23-year-old saved a match point before winning the final seven games of the deciding set to defeat Madison Keys 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-5.

Zheng's victory over Swiatek was only her second in nine career meetings with the six-time Grand Slam champion. Her previous win came in the semi-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The result also marked another milestone in Zheng's comeback from a right elbow injury that required surgery last year. The 2024 Olympic champion fell to 121st in the rankings due to her injury layoff and had to come through three rounds of qualifying to secure her place in the US Open main draw.

Zheng has now become the first women's qualifier to reach the US Open quarter-finals since Emma Raducanu's title-winning run in 2021. It is the 23-year-old's third appearance in the last eight at Flushing Meadows and her fifth Grand Slam quarter-final overall.

She will next face second seed Elena Rybakina for a place in her first US Open semifinal. Rybakina defeated two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth round.
