In November 2019, during an inspection tour of Shanghai, Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, put forward the principle that "cities should be built by the people and for the people," entrusting Shanghai with the mission of building a people-centered city in the new era.

Since then, Shanghai has continued to put this principle into practice, exploring new ways to make the city more livable, inclusive and people-centered.

As part of the program "People-Centered Cities: China's Governance, Global Engagement (Shanghai and Jiangsu)" hosted by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 30 diplomats from 20 countries visited the Shanghai People's City Practice Exhibition Hall, which offers a window into Shanghai's efforts on people-centered governance. Featuring five thematic zones and 25 sections, the exhibition uses interactive and digital displays to showcase the concept of a people's city and highlight Shanghai's practices and achievements in putting people at the heart of urban development.
