Bayern hits five, Manchester United cruises on Champions League return

Bayern Munich scored five second-half goals as they thrashed Bodo/Glimt 5-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Thursday.  The German giant extended its remarkable run of victories in the first game of Europe's premier club competition to 23 consecutive seasons.

The Norwegian visitor kept Bayern at bay throughout the first half, but Jamal Musiala broke the resistance shortly after the break. Harry Kane headed in the second around the hour mark to notch his 34th Champions League goal in 39 appearances for Bayern, before Alphonso Davies struck a powerful half-volley to make it 3-0.

Michael Olise then added two late goals to complete the rout for Vincent Kompany's side, while Bodo/Glimt finished with 10 men after Odin Bjortuft was sent off.

Manchester United also made a strong start as the Red Devils marked their return to the Champions League after a two-season absence with a 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani champion Sabah at Old Trafford.

Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko struck late in the first half to give United a 3-0 advantage at the interval. Lisandro Martinez added the fourth after the break as Michael Carrick's team completed a comfortable win and kept a clean sheet ahead of Sunday's Manchester derby against Manchester City.

Italian newcomer Como enjoyed a memorable Champions League debut with a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig. Martin Baturina and Tasos Douvikas put Cesc Fabregas' side two goals up before half-time, with Assane Diao adding a third after the restart. Andrija Maksimovic pulled one back for Leipzig, but Maximo Perrone struck in stoppage time to round off a historic night for Como.

Elsewhere, Fenerbahce marked its first appearance in the competition proper in 18 years with a 1-1 home draw against Roma. Bryan Cristante gave the visitor the lead before the break, only for Archie Brown to equalize three minutes into the second half.

PSV Eindhoven also drew 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk. Gleiker Mendoza put the Ukrainian side ahead shortly before half-time, while Sergino Dest replied soon after the restart as PSV avoided a sixth straight defeat in the club’s opening Champions League match.

Lens produced the night's most dramatic comeback, beating 10-man Slavia Prague 3-2 away. Danijel Sturm scored twice for the hosts despite Mikulas Konecny’s second-half dismissal, but after Abdallah Sima's first equalizer, Florian Thauvin levelled again in stoppage time before Ruben Aguilar struck moments later to snatch all three points for Lens.
