From learning Chinese as a child to performing her first solo show in China, South African singer Motswedi Modiba, known as MOE, has turned a childhood language into a bridge between two cultures through her voice.

For MOE, language is more than a means of communication. When she speaks and sings in Chinese, she hopes the audience can “feel my heart” and that the feeling can open the door to cultural exchange.

She believes our differences are beautiful and that there is more that brings people together than tears them apart. In the South African philosophy of Ubuntu – “I am because we are” – she has found something that resonates with her experience in China.

Her story is a reminder that cultural exchange is not about becoming the same. It is about opening ourselves to one another, discovering what we share, and finding unity in our differences.
