Starting in late January 1935, in a remarkable demonstration of highly mobile and flexible military manoeuvring, the Red Army led by Mao Zedong succeeded in confusing a numerically far superior Kuomintang force by crossing the Chishui River four times. This breakout from an extremely precarious position against all the odds is recorded in military history as a triumph of courage and ingenuity.
