The Bangladeshi government has launched a three-month campaign to prevent dengue during the peak season for the mosquito-borne disease.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the nationwide campaign in Dhaka on Saturday.

The campaign, carrying the slogans "Keep your own surroundings clean, let us all stay healthy" and "Remove stagnant water every day," also aims to strengthen coordination among government, private-sector and social initiatives.

The campaign runs from September 12 to December 12, with activities coordinated at city, division, district, and sub-district levels.

Tens of thousands of volunteers will take part in the nationwide awareness and cleanliness campaign.

The campaign comes amid a rise in dengue cases in Dhaka and other regions, as dengue fever has claimed 143 lives and infected 50,276 people across Bangladesh so far this year.
