Grades, skills, results ... so much of a child's education can be measured. But what about confidence, imagination, self-expression and the way they learn to see the world?

For a group of children from Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, Sichuan Province, the most important lessons aren’t coming from a textbook. One finds confidence on stage. Another pictures fields of flowers, rain and moonlight. A third reaches for a melody when things go wrong.

If the parts of growing up that matter most can't be measured, how do we give more children the chance to find them?
