In early May 1935, the main force of the Central Red Army was confronted by another natural barrier – the Jinsha River. From May 3 to 9, they succeeded in crossing it, leaving in their wake a pursuing Kuomintang army hundreds of thousands strong. This major victory foiled Chiang Kai-shek's plan to annihilate the Red Army in the Sichuan-Guizhou-Yunnan border region. (Image source: The Red Ribbon on the Earth by Shen Yaoyi)
