China's Pinglu Canal opens for navigation

Pinglu Canal in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region officially opened to commercial navigation on Wednesday, marking the country's first major river-to-sea canal project planned and coordinated at the national level since 1949.

The 134.2-kilometer waterway cuts through southern Guangxi to connect the northern Xijiang River corridor directly with the Beibu Gulf. By bypassing the traditional eastern detour through neighboring Guangdong Province, the route slashes shipping distances between southwestern China and the open sea by more than 560 kilometers.

Local authorities project that the shortcut will cut regional logistics costs by 18% to 30%, yielding roughly 5.2 billion yuan ($720 million) in annual savings for businesses and transport networks. By linking inland manufacturing centers directly to deep-water maritime ports like Qinzhou via coordinated barge networks, the canal anchors the expanding New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. The direct access accelerates southward exports of Chinese electric vehicles and industrial goods while speeding imports of Southeast Asian commodities and raw materials.

Alongside its commercial ambitions, the mega-project has incorporated targeted engineering to soften its environmental footprint.

At the canal's Fenshuiling section, a newly completed overpass carries neither vehicles nor pedestrians. Built exclusively for wildlife, the "ecoduct" is blanketed in soil and native vegetation to reconnect forest canopies severed by the channel. The crossing is designed to allow local species, including leopard cats, masked palm civets and red-bellied squirrels, to traverse what would otherwise be an impassable physical barrier. The intervention aligns with recommendations from a 2025 study published in the journal Land, which assessed habitat fragmentation across 11 regional wildlife groups and urged planners to incorporate dedicated ecological corridors.

Engineers also faced the logistical challenge of managing roughly 315 million cubic meters of earth and rock excavated along the canal's path. Rather than treating the spoil as industrial waste, project managers diverted more than 98% of the material toward local civil works, using it for riverbank reinforcement, soil remediation and the creation of approximately 13,900 mu (927 hectares) of usable farmland.

While the canal's operational launch establishes a vital new artery for cross-border trade, it also sets in motion a longer ecological experiment: whether large-scale transport infrastructure can sustain industrial volume without irrevocably severing the ecosystems it cuts through.
