Do you know what the term "Yak Revolution" refers to? It's a term Chairman Mao Zedong used to describe local people's generous support for the Red Army as it passed through the treacherous grasslands of today's Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture.
Local Tibetan and Qiang people contributed over 15,000 tons of grain and more than 200,000 yaks to help the Red Army survive. Chairman Mao once said, "It's the only debt" in the party's history.
In 1960, Hongyuan County was established. The name itself means "the grasslands that the Red Army passed through". The famous local Maiwa yak is now the county's economic pillar and has been awarded the National Geographical Indication Protection Product and Geographical Indication Certification Trademark.
Hongyuan County today has about 475,000 yaks, 638 family pastures and 220,000 mu (about 146.67 square kilometers) of high-quality forage production bases. With over 200,000 head of livestock, the livestock trading market has become the largest trading platform in the Sichuan-Gansu-Qinghai region.
