European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has delivered her annual State of the European Union address in Strasbourg.

Here are three key points: 

1. The risks of AI – Von der Leyen warned that AI development could move beyond human control. She called for a slower, safer approach, though she offered few concrete proposals for regulation. 

2. Social media and children – She proposed banning social media for under-13s, with stricter supervision for teenagers up to 15. Some groups support the idea but argue that authorities should focus on addictive algorithms rather than broad age-based bans.

 3. Closer ties with Canada – Von der Leyen proposed opening a path for Canada to become the EU’s first associate member. It comes as Ottawa's ties with Washington worsen.
