China successfully defended its title in women's team modern pentathlon at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with Sunday's win also marking the delegation's first gold at the 20th edition of the continental competition.

The team event, determined by the combined scores of the top three finishers, saw China dominate the standings with an impressive total of 4,318 points, thanks to stellar performances from Zhang Mingyu, Wu Xiyao and Meng Xin.

In a post-victory interview with CGTN Sports Scene's Jiang Mengxi, the triumphant trio reflected on the achievement and the exhilaration of standing atop the podium on the first full day of action in Japan.

Wu expressed her excitement, stating, "I'm pretty excited to win the first gold medal and contribute to our country at the Asian Games. I was very excited standing on the podium, but I'm more at peace now."

Meng shared her thoughts on the significance of the win, noting, "We didn't expect it would be the first gold for China, but we firmly believed that China would win gold medals today and that we would clinch gold in the team event."

Zhang emphasized the collective effort that led to their success, adding, "To be able to defend the modern pentathlon title was a team effort. We couldn't have achieved it without everyone on the team."

She was also happy with the squad's ability to seamlessly adjust to the sport's recent replacement of the equestrian ride with an obstacle course.

"Since the event has changed, I've been positively adapting to the situation and also made efforts to transform my competitive approach. The results turned out to be good, which paid off the efforts we made. We have been walking in the right direction. It's our teamwork," Zhang concluded.
