During his visit to the United States in November 2023, President Xi Jinping announced that China was ready to invite 50,000 young Americans to China on exchange and study programs in the next five years.

In January 2024, students from Muscatine, Iowa, became the first group of American students to visit China under the "50,000 in Five Years" initiative. They wrote a letter to President Xi, sharing their joy and experiences from their trip, and later received a reply letter from him.

In the summer of 2026, another group of students from Muscatine and other parts of the United States came to China, and had an unforgettable experience studying and exchanging with their Chinese peers.
