A US F-16 fighter jet assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wing crashed at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany on Tuesday. It was returning from a routine training flight, the US military said.

The pilot ejected safely before the crash and was given medical treatment. The other three F-16s in the formation diverted and landed at Ramstein Air Base. 

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
