Javier García, a former Beijing Bureau Chief with Spain's EFE news agency, followed the route of the Long March to Taiping Ferry in Gulin County, Sichuan Province. This was a key crossing point in the Red Army's "Four Crossings of the Chishui River" campaign. In February 1935, the Central Red Army crossed the Chishui here for the second time, turning back toward northern Guizhou and securing its first major victory since the start of the Long March. On March 21 and 22, the Red Army made its fourth crossing at Taiping Ferry, breaking through an encirclement by hundreds of thousands of Kuomintang troops. To Javier, this ferry is not only testament to a military miracle, but also a living embodiment of how "seeking truth from facts" can guide the way through a crisis and find answers from the reality in a changing world.
