On the middle reaches of the Kwanza River, 230 kilometers from the national capital, Luanda, stands the Caculo Cabaça Hydropower Station. Built by a Chinese enterprise, it is the largest hydropower project in Angola, with an installed capacity of 2,172 MW and a potential annual output in excess of 8,500 GWh. However, after construction began, the builders came across the remains of some ancient settlements, including burial sites. So in 2019, China Energy Engineering Corporation formed an international team of archaeologists from the National Museum of Archaeology of Angola, France's CNRS, the French National Museum of Natural History, the Sorbonne, the University of Warsaw and Harvard University, to carry out research and preservation work.
