China's Mengxiang drilling vessel has set a national deep-sea drilling record by obtaining basalt samples from the South China Sea basin at a depth of 5,000 meters. Researchers also completed on-site processing and analysis of the samples under International Ocean Discovery Program standards, providing new data for studying the evolution of the South China Sea and exploring ultra-deep-water resources.
