America.gov goes online as AI-powered federal government portal

The Trump administration's new AI-powered government portal, America.gov, is now online and accessible to the public.

The homepage greets visitors with a simple message – "Hello, America" – and the promise: "Whatever you need from government, start here."

The site provides a conversational search bar that invites users to ask questions in plain language, offering examples including "How do I get a passport for my child?" The interface also includes voice input.

Our initial testing of the chatbot showed that it can answer questions on government policy areas including taxes, passports and foreign affairs, providing responses tied to official information. When asked about topics unrelated to government business, however, it clearly declined to answer, suggesting the tool is designed to remain focused on government services and policy rather than function as a general-purpose AI chatbot.

The site is designed to consolidate federal information and services into a single, AI-driven hub, guiding users through tasks such as passport applications and tax filing. Officials have described it as a "one-stop shop" meant to replace the maze of separate agency websites.
