Editor's Note: World Heart Day is observed annually on September 29th to raise global awareness about cardiovascular disease and promote preventive measures.

World Heart Day, observed this year under the theme "Don't miss a beat," offers an opportunity for people around the world to reaffirm a shared commitment to reducing preventable and premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases.

On an individual level, adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can go a long way toward reducing cardiovascular risk. Quitting tobacco, limiting salt intake, staying physically active every day and managing stress are among the key steps people can take to protect their heart health.

In an interview with CGTN, Yang Yuejin, chief physician in cardiology at Fuwai Hospital, CAMS & PUMC, explained that emergency medications such as nitroglycerin and aspirin can play an important role in managing suspected cardiac emergencies. Older adults and younger people at high risk of cardiovascular disease may be advised to keep such medications on hand, but they should only be taken according to a doctor's guidance.

On World Heart Day, CGTN shares two comics as a gentle reminder: embrace a healthy lifestyle, protect your heart, and don't miss a beat.

The comic shows the impact of bad habits on atherosclerosis.

The comic shows the correct directions for taking supplements.
