The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has launched its first Trustworthy AI Framework for the Olympic Movement, aimed at guiding organizations in using artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly, ethically and with confidence.

Developed with support from digital transformation consulting partner Deloitte, the framework sets out seven principles – safeguarding, data protection, reliability, transparency, accountability, fairness and sustainability – and a checklist to help organizations assess risks, the IOC said.

Alejandro Merino-Madrid, the IOC's head of AI, said, "AI has the potential to transform how athletes prepare, how sport is delivered, and how fans experience the Olympic Games."

"But technology must always serve sport – not the other way around. That means protecting athlete data, safeguarding fair competition and ensuring people understand how AI is being used. This framework gives the Olympic Movement a common foundation to embrace those opportunities with confidence while keeping athletes’ integrity and our values at the center," Merino-Madrid added.

"Artificial intelligence is transforming sport, creating opportunities across athlete support, Games operations, fan engagement and the day-to-day work of sports organizations," read the IOC statement.

"At the same time, its increasing use raises important questions around fairness, athlete data, transparency, security and accountability. These challenges are particularly important in sport, where trust in competition, decision-making and the integrity of results is fundamental," the statement said.
