It's a National Day tradition: a towering basket of flowers installed in the heart of Beijing. 

The first of its kind went up at Tiananmen Square in 1986.

Nearly four decades on, the designs change every year, but the scale keeps growing – and so does the craft behind. 

Landscaping, horticulture and flower breeding are on show in one enormous display.
