A glimpse into the exquisite beauty of an ancient empress's crown

The ceremonial crown of Empress Xiao of the Sui Dynasty (581-618) is one of the earliest, highest-ranking and most complete crowns ever found in China, featuring an intricate design and sophisticated craftsmanship.

The crown was unearthed in 2012 from the tomb of Empress Xiao, wife of Yang Guang, the last emperor of the Sui Dynasty, in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. Due to its severely deteriorated condition, the original was transferred for laboratory archaeological cleaning, conservation and research. Based on the findings, a replica was made to recreate the crown's original structure, decorative elements and craftsmanship for public viewing.
