The successful deployment and retrieval, in November 2025, of a 5,000 m² parachute, the largest of its kind in the world, at a site in Alxa Left Banner, Inner Mongolia, marked a significant step forward in the testing of a core component of China's first national R&D program for airborne wind energy harvesting. The program, by targeting efficient wind capture, air-to-ground energy transmission and long-duration stable control, aims at advancing China's AWE development toward a larger scale, greater efficiency and, ultimately, industrialization. The parachute, designed to harness winds at altitudes exceeding 300 meters, converts the wind energy into electricity by driving ground-based generators through a traction cable.
