Chinese duo Wei & Jiang reflect on winning badminton mixed doubles gold at Asian Games

China's mixed doubles badminton pair Wei Yaxin and Jiang Zhenbang claimed their first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games. Following their victory, the world number three ranked pair engaged with Sports Scene's Shen Xiang, reflecting on the triumph and the lessons learned on their journeys so far. The pair also spoke of their ambition as they now prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. 

"I'm very excited to win the gold medal," Wei stated. Jiang, who was equally thrilled added: "I'm quite excited too, because it's my first Asian Games and I won gold."

As they revisited their near-miss at the World Championships, the duo addressed the pressures faced while trailing in the opening game. Wei said: "There was no pressure. We've already missed the gold medal at major events, after we won a silver and a bronze at the world championships. I just went for it." Jiang echoed this sentiment, adding: "There wasn't much pressure. I just wanted to fully release myself."

The pair also discussed the growth they have experienced since reuniting this year. Wei reflected: "I think I can understand him better now. I know what he is thinking about." Jiang agreed, stating: "Our individual ability has improved compared with before, and now that we're paired up again, we're more in sync."

Looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the Chinese duo shared their aspirations. Wei emphasized the importance of staying grounded while Jiang added that it is important to take things one step at a time.
