The Global South, accounting for 86% of the world's population, contributing roughly 80% to the world's total economic growth, has long lacked a sufficient say in the global governance system. Ben Norton, founder and editor-in-chief of The Geopolitical Economy Report, points out that as the world moves toward multipolarity, China's Global Governance Initiative advocates reforming existing global system. Such reform aims to build an equal multilateral framework free from hegemony, safeguard every country's sovereignty and allow nations to pursue their own paths of governance and development, hence improving their voice as a whole in the global governance system.
