The Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests and is the political foundation of China-US relations, Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday.

Zhang said there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China. She stressed that adhering to the one-China principle is a basic norm governing international relations and a universal consensus of the international community.

Zhang said the Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests and is the most important issue in China-US relations. If properly handled, bilateral ties can remain generally stable; if not, the two countries could come into confrontation or even conflict, pushing China-US relations into an extremely dangerous situation, she emphasized.

Zhang said the Taiwan authorities led by Lai Ching-te have stubbornly maintained a separatist stance in pursuit of "Taiwan independence," refused to recognize the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle, and acted as the primary cause of disruptions to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Firmly opposing "Taiwan independence" separatism and safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait serve the common interests of both China and the United States, Zhang said.

Zhang called on Taiwan compatriots to recognize the extreme harm and dangers posed by the Lai Ching-te authorities' pursuit of "Taiwan independence," firmly oppose separatist activities, and work together to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and advance national reunification.
