Looking into China: A German clown's bond with Chinese circus

Global Stringer

German circus producer Raoul Schoregge was originally a clown performer in a European circus. In the late 1980s, he saw Chinese circus for the first time and fell in love with Chinese culture. That encounter across mountains and seas gradually grew into a cultural bond that has run through his life. Years later, he unexpectedly became the producer of the Chinese national circus, touring Chinese circus across Europe and using the "clown" – a role that never existed in Chinese circus – to help European audiences understand Eastern acrobatics.

In his eyes, China has a deep heritage of more than 2,000 years of circus history. Through his performances, he hopes to introduce more people to the unique charm of Chinese culture. He looks forward to more Chinese and European artists joining hands in exchange, allowing laughter to cross borders and become a bridge connecting different civilizations.
