Looking into China: A Croatian lawyer's adventure in China

Global Stringer

Ivo Frangeš, a 38-year-old Croatian lawyer, was once a circus performer. In 2015, drawn by China's culture and scenery, he set out on his first trip.

Along the way, he stumbled into a part in a Shanghai play. He saw a call for Italian-speaking actors in a WeChat group and signed up. Two months later, he was on stage at the Lyceum Theatre in a Shakespearean production.

The rehearsals were a hoot. His Chinese colleagues chatted in Chinese, and Frangeš, thinking it was his turn, recited his lines in Shakespearean English. Everyone burst out laughing –  they'd be discussing what to have for dinner.

They also took him to try local dishes. After the show, children asked for his autographs and the audience queued for photos. He says he felt like he'd won an Oscar.

Frangeš still wants to come back. There's a lot of China he hasn't seen.
