Saturn will reach opposition at 8:29 p.m. Beijing Time on October 4, appearing at its brightest and largest of the year as seen from Earth. Skywatchers looking east at dusk will be able to spot the golden planet with the naked eye.

Opposition occurs when the Sun, Earth and an outer planet line up roughly in a straight line, with Earth in the middle, experts explain. Viewed from Earth, the planet lies opposite the Sun in the sky. Around opposition, it reaches its highest point in the sky at about midnight.

Saturn reaches opposition roughly every 378 days. This time, it shines at a magnitude of 0.3, making it visible to the naked eye.

There is no need to catch the exact moment of opposition. Saturn will remain high in the evening sky through the end of the year, giving skywatchers plenty of opportunities to observe it.

This year also brings an added attraction: Saturn's rings are coming back into view. In 2025, they appeared almost edge-on from Earth, making them seem to disappear. Their tilt as seen from Earth is now increasing, allowing observers with a high-magnification telescope to enjoy a clearer view of the ringed planet.
