China tops medal table as Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games close

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games closed on Sunday following 16 days of competition.

The closing ceremony featured performances celebrating Japanese culture and the spirit of the Games, before the Olympic Council of Asia flag was handed over to the 2030 hosts, Doha. OCA President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani then officially declared the 20th Asian Games closed.

The Games featured 43 sports, with 469 gold medals awarded.

China finished at the top of the medal table for the 12th consecutive time with 169 golds, 89 silvers and 83 bronze medals, also achieving its best-ever performance at an Asian Games held abroad.

Japan set a national record with 83 gold medals and 269 medals overall.

The Republic of Korea finished third with 39 golds and 150 medals.

China once again excelled in swimming, winning 30 gold medals and 54 medals overall.

Nineteen-year-old Zhang Zhanshuo made history by becoming the first swimmer to win seven gold medals at a single Asian Games.

Thirteen-year-old Yu Zidi also established herself as a star in the making, claiming three golds and setting an Asian record in the 200-meter individual medley.

Yu was named the female Most Valuable Player of the Games, while Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson, who won the men's 100m and 200m, received the men's award.
