Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a broad patent agreement that marks the first 5G patent licensing deal between the two companies and signals growing international recognition of China's original innovation, Huawei said on Monday.

Under the agreement, Huawei will license and transfer patents to Qualcomm in fields including computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and networking. This marks the first time Huawei has licensed and transferred patents to Qualcomm in these areas, demonstrating that the value of its innovations extends beyond 4G and 5G.

The transaction involves patents only. Huawei said it has a practice of using patent transactions to open up and share its latest technologies, helping promote their adoption. The company added that the agreement reflects Qualcomm's continued recognition of Huawei's innovation and intellectual property in 5G and other technology fields.

Qualcomm has agreed to purchase certain Huawei patents in the United States, a move that typically involves payment to Huawei. Detailed financial terms were not disclosed.

Huawei and Qualcomm have signed several agreements over the years, with the earliest dating back to 2001.

In 2011, Huawei received intellectual property licensing revenue for the first time after resolving an IP dispute with Motorola. Since 2021, Huawei's IP licensing revenue has remained positive.
