Brazil's presidential election is headed for a runoff after no candidate secured a majority in the first round, according to results released by the country's Superior Electoral Court on Sunday.
Flavio Bolsonaro of Brazil's Liberal Party, the 45-year-old son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, was leading the incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of the Workers' Party, 80, who is seeking a fourth term.
With around 99.84% of the ballots counted, the tally showed Flavio garnered about 47% of valid votes and Lula came in second with about 45%.
As a candidate must pass 50% in order to win outright in the first round, the two leading candidates are expected to face each other in a second-round vote on October 25.
