French student protests intensified on Tuesday, with riot police using tear gas and batons during clashes with demonstrators in Paris, Strasbourg and other cities.
The nationwide movement is calling for better school conditions, including repairs to aging buildings and replacements for absent teachers. A day earlier, a 15-year-old student lost a hand during a protest in Lens, an incident that is now under investigation. More than 250,000 people joined Tuesday's demonstrations, according to the Interior Ministry.
