US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States will invest $6.6 billion to build a new shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland, to produce submarines, submarine components and unmanned underwater vehicles.

Speaking in Maryland, Trump said the new shipyard will build the next generation of US submarines and manufacture key components, including unmanned underwater vehicles, torpedo launch tubes and parts for Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.

The project is expected to create more than 3,100 jobs in Maryland and support an additional 11,000 jobs nationwide, Trump said.

According to the US Department of Defense, the shipyard is expected to become "the largest facility of its kind in the United States." It will be built and operated by US defense contractor Anduril Industries.

Anduril will invest $3.7 billion in the project, while the US Navy will contribute $2.9 billion, according to the department.
