Chinese researchers have developed a thorium-229 nuclear optical clock, according to a research paper published in the scientific journal Nature on October 7.
It uses transitions inside the atomic nucleus as a frequency reference as opposed to a conventional atomic clock that uses electron transitions. It could eventually provide a more stable and practical time standard as the nucleus is less affected by external electromagnetic disturbances.
