Cold Dew

Cold Dew (Hanlu), the 17th solar term of the traditional Chinese calendar, falls on October 8 this year. Across China, autumn deepens and the dew turns cold. The ancients saw three signs in the 15-day term: the last wild geese arrive like guests; sparrows disappear and clams appear; and chrysanthemums open, gold against the fading green.

"Cold Dew deepens autumn,"wrote Tang Dynasty poet Yuan Zhen. "The chrysanthemums turn yellow."

The flowers bloom. Hares build up their reserves for winter. Days stay mild, but the nights turn cool – and the air takes on the dry bite that belongs to this season alone.
